"Character Rocks"
Liberty Corner School's Character Education Committee meets periodically to debrief and reflect upon the character education program, and the initiatives implemented to achieve the character education goals. Understanding that parents and families are the primary models of character for children, the school introduced "Character Rocks" to promote parental and family involvement in the program. Parents inform teachers of exemplary acts of good character observed outside of school. The school looks for deeds that are above and beyond the normal expectations of a child within a family. Parents record the child's good deed and send a note in to the teacher. For each deed, a child is presented with a colored rock (each grade level is assigned a specific color of rock) and it is placed in a clear container in the classroom. At the end of the month, rocks are added to grade-level clear containers found in the showcase. Ultimately, all the rocks from all grade-levels are mixed into a very large glass container for all to "see" the character growth of all students.
