Student Council for Service
The sixth grade Student Council at the Mill Pond School in Westborough, MA, is not a typical election-based student council. Instead, any sixth grade student who is interested in community- and school-based service and leadership is encouraged to apply. This eliminates the popularity contest that often is associated with student council at this age. The application process involves an essay where students have to demonstrate the character traits, based on the school’s Keys to Success program, and how their specific character traits will benefit the council. Any sixth grader that applies on time is welcomed as a member of the council. This encourages all types of students to apply and currently there are 63 members out of a class of about 260. Student Council members sign up to take part in many different subcommittees that have different goals such as: welcoming new students, helping the parent group with various social activities, designing birthday cards for a youth hospice program, as well as providing assistance wherever the Student Council is needed. This enables the Student Council to provide service to the Mill Pond School, the town of Westborough, and Worcester County.
