The Labyrinth
At the Montessori School of Bowling Green, classrooms walk together on the labyrinth monthly to give themselves a time for reflection and meditation. Labyrinths are ancient, cross-cultural, peace-making entities. Parents and visitors are encouraged to experience the labyrinth and reflect on the peace that it brings. Additionally, students have daily opportunities where they can choose to walk on the labyrinth during recess, which they do. Alumni of the school often speak of the preparedness they felt when they transitioned to another school upon graduating the elementary program. One student said, “For Montessori children, patience, kindness, and peacefulness are not just virtues expected by teachers. They are traits taught at a young age as the only way to act.” All of our character education initiatives revolve around the student engaging their mind, body, and spirit to be internally motivated, work well with others, and care about the world around them.
