P.A.W.S.for a Cause
A second grade class at Murphy Elementary School, in conjunction with the Student Ambassadors of Character, decided to conduct a student-driven service learning project to go along with the character traits of the month and to benefit a local, no-kill animal shelter. Students used class meeting time to research the needs of the shelter and put the project together. They made posters for the school, and phone calls to all Murphy families requesting donations. They called themselves “P.A.W.S (Powerful, Achieving, Working Students) for a
Cause”. Students took the donations to the animal shelter. While at the shelter, they toured the facility, met employees that worked there, learned how to care for and be careful with animals and how their donations would make a difference. Students wrote about the project in their journals, and met to debrief after the trip. They finished their project up with papers to reflect upon what they had learned.
