Mindfulness in Character Education
The 2010-2011 North Ogden Jr. High's Character Education program focuses on mindfulness. Mindfulness is the act of being in the present and paying attention to paying attention. The school has taught and encouraged the students to be more mindful in their learning, relationships, attitude, responsibilities, and with the environment. Students learn strategies in each area to become more mindful of their character and empowered in their actions and behaviors. The Character Education Team, which includes the creative counselors, an enthusiastic math teacher, the counseling secretary, and supportive administrators, meet once a month for a Character Education presentation with each grade level. The presentations are lively, engaging and are created with a variety of teaching styles to benefit each kind of learner. Affirmations, such as "I am a Mindful Learner" or "I am Mindful in My Relationships" are posted on bulletin boards throughout the school. The excitement from the students has been absolutely positive.
