Northview High School Students Work to Develop Good Character
At Northview High School, students use a Character Development Daily Report Card to guide them in the practice of eight core ethical and performance values that include respectful language, respectful actions, work ethic, responsibility, honesty, compassion, tolerance, and goal setting. The practice has been in progress since it started four years ago. In the beginning, the school staff selected and defined those eight core values for students with emotional disturbance. The teachers monthly met the character education facilitator to analyze data and brainstorm interventions and instructional strategies. Classrooms had posters with definitions of what traits did and did not look like in action. Each trait is defined on a 4-3-2-1 rubric defined by leader, participant and detractor levels. The student outcome goal is for each student to perform at leader or participant level daily for 90% of the school year. Students performing at consistent leader levels are given opportunities to meet after school for social opportunities and team activities in sports and daily living.
