Northview High School's Work as a Professional Learning Community
At Northview High School, staff members experienced an introduction to bullying including the five types and its effects. They learned about adult behaviors that unintentionally perpetuate bullying and learned how to give effective behavior changing praise. They also learned strategies for supporting bystanders, targets and bullies. Staff are preparing for year three of training in which they will work with Hal Urban's "Lessons from the Classroom: 20 Things Great Teachers Do." This study will provide staff with a resource of simple strategies to build community in their classrooms and effectively reduce bullying by establishing a school-wide nourishing environment. Data collected from the trainings indicate that discussions need to be held with the school-wide improvement and safety teams regarding the establishment of support systems for frequently targeted students. The district's character education facilitator will support the team in these efforts.
