Heroes of Character
“Heroes of Character” is this year’s homework for the character
development effort at Peninsula Heritage School. By standardizing the homework, everyone knew what
to expect for each of the six character qualities. Each of the six character qualities have been presented in HERO form, the result of their HEROES of CHARACTER homework. The guidelines were to select someone, living or dead, famous or familiar, but absolutely NO superheroes. Their homework sheet had lines to write the hero’s name and why that person is a hero for that
particular quality. The practice in action works this way: each student
has a week to complete their homework. They are encouraged to
brainstorm and research with family members. The HEROES were incorporated in the assembly presentations for that particular character quality. The performing arts teacher worked with the individual classroom teachers to select a focus for the HERO effort. For example, in presenting RESPECT, the 5th grade teacher asked her students to select their HEROES from their social studies curriculum (Paul Revere, Thomas Paine, etc.)
