Cadet Mentoring Program
ROTC cadets from the high school are transported once a week for an hour to Snow Creek Elementary School to serve as tutors and mentors. Cadets are assigned either to work with an individual student or in a classroom setting with several students at the elementary school. Cadets are prepared for their roles as mentors/tutors by the ROTC commander and the elementary school counselor. Cadets provide individuals or groups with academic help but, even more importantly, model the development of character traits already emphasized at both schools: respect, citizenship, self-discipline, responsibility and good judgment. Cadets benefit as they are learning and refining their own character development through practicing those skills. Elementary school students also benefit from academic help and from observing the character and values exhibited through the relationships formed with the cadets. This close observation helps young students better develop and practice these skills themselves. The collaboration between the high school and elementary school is important in that it emphasizes to students and families that everyone in the educational community is committed to promoting any and all opportunities to instill positive traits in students.
