Athlete of Character Award
At St. Clair Junior High School, the Athlete of Character Medal is awarded to a player from the opposing team at the end of each of indoor activity: volleyball and boys' and girls' basketball. The idea is to recognize those athletes who display good character and promote excellent character through play. The St. Clair Junior High coach discusses with the players the importance of good sportsmanship and character. The coach aims that through consideration of the Athlete of Character process, the school team will exemplify what is expected during the game. The players think, throughout the contest, about an opposing player who meets the qualifications they have adopted. At the conclusion of each game, the team approaches the other team’s bench and awards that player a medal that scribes "Athlete of Character." The practice of displaying good character has been accepted extremely well by the other teams and also reinforces sportsmanship during the contests. And by tying character education into the sporting arena, the school hopes that good character will transfer into real life student actions.
