Scholarship for Character
Sullivan Primary School's kindergarten and first grade students worked with the Rotary and created a unique way to provide a scholarship for high school graduating students. SPS students made greeting cards to be auctioned by the Rotary at their yearly Radio/TV Auction to the public. The proceeds from the auction are put into a scholarship fund where the SPS students and Rotary form a panel to create interview questions. They look at the students' academic achievements, as well as service to the community and their character commitments. The process for preparation is making the greeting cards, forming a panel, deciding on interview questions, giving interviews, and selecting the recipient. The experience provides Sullivan Primary students with the foundation for voice and choice. The goal is to give students the ability to recognize character traits, an opportunity to transfer skills learned, and apply those skills in the interview process. This practice is very effective in providing opportunities for students to practice what they have learned in a real life situation and have the ability to recognize someone for good character and to see it come to fruition.
