Cosby and Character
In an effort to make character education lessons more engaging, West Potomac incorporates episodes of The Cosby Show into weekly lessons. The show provides a unique opportunity for students and teachers to discuss and examine issues of character in ways that both can enjoy. Teachers have common lesson plans for activities and discussions both prior to and after an episode of the television show. Lessons last about 45 minutes and are used to highlight a topic related to character education or one of the school's core values: Responsibility, Punctuality and Preparation, Achievement or Respect. Students and teachers from all grade levels and demographic backgrounds have reported positive experiences in incorporating the fictional scenarios into real discussions of how character and behavior impact student lives. The episodes have proven a great way to stimulate learning and activity around the core values.
