Buddy Character Lessons
Buddy Character Lessons are an integral part of character education at Woerther Elementary School. Representatives of Woerther’s Character Congress discuss monthly character words, brainstorm activity ideas, and vote on the character lessons. These lessons are accessible to all students and are taught by student representatives. Older students are role models while younger students learn from their examples. Buddy Character Lessons teach the character expectations of the school such as how to be responsible school citizens and how to treat each other. They provide student representatives public speaking skills and leadership opportunities. They help create a safe environment for learning and growth. Student representatives discuss and talk about examples of the character word at the monthly Character Congress meeting so they are prepared to teach the lesson to their classmates and buddy classmates. Students also reflect on their learning and experiences at the next Character Congress meeting, with family members, and school staff which extends their learning and performance of character traits into various areas and situations. These experiences allow students to help one another learn.
