Student Led Character Lessons
At Wohlwend Elementary School, students learn about different character traits through lessons by their peers. Every month, fourth- and fifth-grade students from the Wohlwend Character Council teach mini-lessons focused around CHARACTERplus words of the month. During the lessons, the small groups of Character Council members present an overview of the character trait for the month, give examples of how to demonstrate the trait, and have the students participate in role plays that incorporate demonstrating the character traits in different situations the kids might encounter. The lessons make everyone think more about displaying positive character traits. The council members also visit each classroom to discuss ways students can model the different character traits. Then, teachers spend the month ‘catching’ students in the act of demonstrating positive character traits. Those children are presented with Character Awards in a small ceremony in their classrooms at the end of the month.
