Autism Awareness
One of Diversity Club’s project this school year is entitled “We Ought to Know about Autism.” Students chose this topic because some of them know people with autism in their families and in their classes. Initially, their focus was just to bring attention to this cause. By getting involved, students discovered how common autism is and how little is known about it by high school students. Students became so interested and involved with this issue that they turned it into a “global call-to-action project.” They traveled across states to Memphis, Tennessee to present their cause to 1992 Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchu Tum of Guatemala and to hundreds of high school students from various high schools during the 2011 PEACE JAM conference.
