Career Day Assembly
In addition to community and parent guests speaking in individual classrooms as part of the Career Day planned by the Parent Engagement Committee, the character education student representatives requested that they be given the opportunity to plan a school-wide assembly for the students. The character education students collectively wrote scripts and developed a corresponding slide show describing the importance of character in career choices. Ima N. Control, Officer Reese Pect, Dr. Karen G., Mr. Al Ways Honest, and Firefighter Resse Ponsibility were fictional characters created by the students who spoke to the student body about how he/she uses a particular core value (as indicated by the name) in his/her career. Following each presentation, the audience was given time to ask impromptu questions to the presenters. For example, one student asked our “special education teacher,” Ms. Ima N. Control, what her favorite part of her career was. She responded that she loved helping children learn. The presenters had to have enough knowledge of the core value in action to be able to respond to such questions appropriately.
