Living on Your Own: Creating Responsible Consumers
The “Living on Your Own” consumer math unit provides a comprehensive approach to consumer education by engaging students in meaningful, hands-on activities that model real-life financial situations. Parents and community members are also involved to help support and guide the students on their journey to financial literacy. Through the experiences in this unit, students learn much more than core mathematics curriculum. They learn the core values of Bayless Junior High: respect and responsibility. As students obtain jobs, create budgets, find apartments, finance cars, and pay bills, they learn the importance of building financial responsibility at a young age. They also reflect upon the importance of education in establishing financial independence.
