Respecting the Environment
First grade students promote respect for the school grounds. The students chose to focus their service learning project on caring for the environment. With input from the principal, the students launched a campaign to teach other students in the school about respecting the garden beds on the school grounds. The students first researched about the importance of respecting the environment. The students discussed how they might teach other students how to respect the school grounds. They decided that placing signs in the garden beds would help remind students to stay out of the garden beds. The students conducted a social science experiment that examined the effectiveness of signs in the garden beds. The results showed that signs dramatically reduced the number of students travelling through the garden beds. The students then made permanent signs in art class. The signs will be placed in strategic areas on the school grounds to promote respect for the environment.
