Cutting Boards for Toys
Cranford High School wood tech students collect and save scrap wood throughout the school year to use to design and construct high end handcrafted culinary cutting boards. Students take into consideration the wood properties to determine which will work for the purpose. They cut the wood into strips of varying thicknesses and experiment with them to develop unique designs. Once the design is determined, the strips are laminated, scraped, planed, cut to size, and finished. The students then display the finished boards along with posters, photographs, and banners explaining that the funds will be used to purchase toys for children through the Toys for Tots program and terminally ill children at the local Center for Hope Hospice. This year, the group raised over $1500. The woods teacher, Mr. Chorazak, took the woods students on a field trip to Toys R Us to purchase the toys to be donated. Each student was responsible for selecting toys for the Toys for Tots collection as well as a toy for a specific child at the Center for Hope Hospice. The following day, the toys were given to representatives from the Cranford Fire Department, U.S. Marine Corps, and Center for Hope Hospice.
