Veteran's Celebration Day
In Fall 2009 the Edgewood Middle School staff focused on building student core character values. Under leadership of the Faculty Advisory Committee, all teachers were encouraged to integrate character lessons into their curriculum about Veteran’s Day. Students completed many assignments and tasks concerning Veteran’s Day that culminated on the Veteran’s Celebration Day. The day included Student Council, National Junior Honor Society, Multi-Media Class, Orchestra, Band and Choir students welcoming and entertaining veterans during a luncheon. The day closed with an all-school assembly listening to speeches by veterans and a standing ovation as a student played Taps on his trumpet. By the end of the day, students described the Veteran’s Celebration Day as “memorable, meaningful, humbling, unimaginable, and deep respect.” Teachers reacted with pride as they watched their students experience empathy for the veterans. Since then, Veteran’s Celebration Day has become an annual event and many veterans look forward to attending our event.
