Recess Stations
While analyzing data, our PBIS team noticed a trend of increasing numbers of office referrals occurring on the playground. The team determined our students did not have the proper skills needed to spend 30 minutes of unstructured time on the playground and that was leading to the increase in referrals. The concept of “recess stations” was implemented as a remediation. The PE teacher designed stations that all grade levels can use during outdoor recess. The stations are an extension of activities and skills being taught in PE class and provide more structured activities for students on the playground. The PE teacher sets up the stations before the first recess shift. At the end of each shift the students are responsible for ensuring the supplies for each station. Each station consists of a laminated page with directions and all equipment needed for the activity. Example stations: • ball throw into a target • Four square • Horseshoes • Jump rope • Hula hoop • Soccer • Beachball • Volleyball.
