Neighbors in Need Food Drive
Forest Avenue School’s “Neighbors in Need’ food drive, benefitting a local church, was designed on a stage to look like an old-fashioned pantry/market. This enabled the students to be directly involved with the ‘shopping’ for a Thanksgiving meal by using a pre-printed checklist of healthy choices. Included in each bag was a family-sized meal of traditional makings for a Thanksgiving dinner (except the turkey) along with festive placemats designed by the students depicting drawings of favorite thanksgiving foods, family traditions and words of encouragement. A lesson in each classroom, led by the staff nurse and aided by parent volunteers of the Community Service Committee, reinforced healthy eating habits, lending a helping hand to neighbors and how one person can make a difference in someone’s life.
