Breaking Into Business
Emphasizing positive character traits as integral to lifelong learning and achievement, Gettys Middle School sponsors Breaking Into Business—a student-managed simulation of a small food service industry. The education of students with exceptional learning needs in a self-contained classroom is focused on a rigorous curriculum designed to overcome years of the most extreme academic struggles. However, character education for these special students is not neglected in this school’s setting. “Gettys Canteen” merchandises snacks during lunchtime break periods. In relegating every function of the business’ success to the student, the school is affirming the students’ dignity, promoting the welfare of the whole individual, and defining rights and responsibilities in a democratic society. Also, the class curriculum does address academic standards directed towards learning skills necessary to running a business. By being accountable for completing their assigned daily tasks and being rewarded for increased sales figures, individuals experience the self-confidence residual to the realization they have demonstrated responsibility in being part of a financially successful business simulation. While universal academic and professional goals are often deemed unobtainable for a student whose confidence is riddled with defeat and neglect, Breaking Into Business fosters positive character traits.
