The Great Greenwood Giveaway
The Great Greenwood Giveaway (GGG), a free garage sale for community members in need, was developed in October of 2010. Students and their parents gathered gently used clothing, books, games, household items and toys from their homes and donated them to our school. Throughout the week, students sorted, organized, and displayed these items in our gymnasium. During this time, teachers taught lessons of compassion and empathy in their classrooms, and the students developed an understanding of the true purpose of the event. At week’s end, the teamwork of our students, staff, and parents resulted in a gymnasium full of items that were all available for free. Almost 600 people attended our event and took what they needed at no cost. Our gymnasium full of materials dwindled to three car loads of items that were then dropped off at the local Goodwill store.
