Second Grade Business
Second grade students are a step closer to understanding the world of high finance and, more importantly, helping others. Students studied economics and created their own “businesses” as part of their Social Studies unit, People in the Marketplace. Arsenal Credit Union marketing department did a presentation illustrating the importance of saving/borrowing money and advertising. Second grade teachers Phyllis Ackfeld and Lisa Maurer invited other community leaders and parents to visit the students to talk about many different aspects of business. The students created advertisements and business cards for their businesses. On February 23rd the children opened for business. They invited their parents, other students and staff to come sample their wares for only $.25. It was an amazing success. The second grade students chose to donate a portion of their profits to Hagemann’s Ambassador’s club. The Ambassador’s club then donated this money to the families in Sunset Hills who lost their homes after a tornado on New Year’s Eve. The remaining profit will be used to buy student chosen items for their classrooms.
