History Happens Here: Through Character
Students, parents, alumni, community partners, and staff collaborated to research the history of the Truman School building. A transition team representing all stakeholders was formed to ease the transition from the elementary to middle school building and honor the community’s past. The building has served the community over the past four decades as an early childhood center, an elementary school, a junior high school, and the first school to implement the “Middle School Concept” in the state of Missouri. To celebrate the school’s various roles in the community and honor the people who have come before us, students have been discovering and celebrating our neighborhood history. This year’s history project has grown to involve collaboration with local and state historical groups, the Lindbergh Foundation, alumni, and the entire district. It has culminated in a very big visible exhibit at the Missouri History Museum at Forest Park, where we can share our work statewide. This was Missouri’s first student-led history exhibit. Students worked alongside their professional museum mentors as curators, designers, public historians, media specialists, and event planners.
