Counselor Mail
Counselor Mail is part of a year-long character education initiative designed to highlight every student’s progress in character building and to create a caring school community. Every Monday, one student in every Hiawatha classroom gets a handwritten letter from Hiawatha’s school counselor and a fun activity, such as a core value word search or friendship puzzle. The letter highlights at least one positive behavior that the student exhibited that week. The letter also expresses appreciation for those actions, reflecting on how they have made a positive impact on the school environment. Staff can nominate students for Counselor Mail and describe the students’ actions to the school counselor. Each student at Hiawatha receives two letters each school year. The letters notably benefit the school climate, students’ belief in their behavioral success, and students’ level of comfort when it comes to expressing their concerns with their school counselor and school personnel in general.
