It's a Parent Thing- Class Meeting
One of the objectives of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, which all of CV’s elementary schools and middle school participate, is to further the bullying prevention message and initiative to parents and the community. We have had teachers volunteer to come after school / work hours to host parents in their classrooms for “It’s a Parent Thing” class meetings. Parents will take part in the process of learning about and experiencing a class meeting just like their children do each week at school. Class meetings provide students with opportunities to assume responsibility and help students take ownership for their actions by involving them in the process of understanding and questioning rules, guidelines, limits, and consequences. Students are able to reason and reflect on their actions, think about the consequences of their behavior, and comprehend the impact they have on others. It is when students believe their ideas are respected and valued that they will be productive participants and will truly take ownership and responsibility for their learning. It is through this process that we want to influence parents and help to create background knowledge about what their children experience and learn so they can provide consistent support at home.
