Advocacy Families
The MHS Advocacy program came out of a need to engage students and their families in a dynamic manner to assist students to become more self-sufficient and build lasting relationships with school personnel. Advocacy is designed to assist students in obtaining greater success at school and in our local community. The program began in the 2008-2009 school year when 15 teachers volunteered to be advocates. Each teacher selected 5 students that they wanted to include in their “family” and 5 more “at-risk” students were assigned to each teacher. Students stay with the same advocate throughout their high school career. In the current school year (2010-2011), all 105 teachers and administrators are serving as advocates and serve approximately 1,200 of our 1,590 member student body. Advocacy families meet for 20 to 30 minutes once a week and deal with a variety of topics ranging from grade checks, attendance, character lessons, planning outside-of-school events, and fun activities designed to build relationships.
