Standards of Behavior and “Blue Slip” Awards
The students at Sag Harbor Elementary School are well-versed in our Standards of Behavior: Respect others by being kind in action and/or words, Respect property, Demonstrate cooperative behaviors, and Demonstrate good manners. These 4 standards are hung in every classroom and posted in hallways, but the greatest reminder we have is the “Blue Slip”. At the start of every school year, all members of our school faculty and staff are given a “Blue Slip” pad. When a student is “caught” by a faculty or staff member exhibiting one of the Standards of Behavior, a Blue Slip is given to the student to take home and share their success with their family and a white copy is given to their classroom teacher. These pads allow for an immediate and tangible acknowledgement of a student caught doing the right thing. We find that our 5th graders are just as appreciative of their Blue Slips as our kindergarteners. This program is an effective way to promote the core ethical and performance values of our character education program throughout the day and in all areas of our building.
