Giving Students a Meaningful Voice in Educational Decisions
Students in my 11th and 12th grade Modern Problems class operate a snack vending machine and, with the profits, award grants to students or teachers that apply for funds that directly affect students at Southern Valley. We were able to extend this with a grant I received by allowing students to vote on which teachers would receive funding for their technology proposals out of a total grant of $11,000. All 12 students had a vote, the Superintendent had a vote, and I had a vote. Students were able to take action through their vote and through other projects we work on that not only reveal character, but force students to think about how others will benefit from the projects that we work on.
