Diversity Appreciation Days
In order to promote the concept of understanding and accepting individual differences to the students in our school, the KidsBridge team initially came up with the idea of using learning stations. After further discussion and brainstorming, they expanded this idea to include other school wide activities. With the support of our principal, the Kidsbridge team created Diversity Appreciation Days. To promote this event, they created and videotaped skits depicting a typical bullying situation, the effects it could have on the victim, and showed how better understanding could lead to acceptance. These skits were shown on school television during morning announcements. For two days in November, students were exposed to continuous messages about tolerance and acceptance. Through learning stations in our gymnasiums, famous quotes about diversity placed on school computer desktops and read over the PA system, a KidsBridge-created PowerPoint shown and narrated during all lunches, and lessons in all core classes focusing on diversity, the student body continuously received messages about accepting of the uniqueness and differences of all individuals in our school.
