Book Cafes
We are working hard at Valley Elementary to help each of our students develop character and experience academic success during and after school. Our school instituted a winter reading activity in 2005 called Book Cafés. Participating families read a novel together at home, and then meet at school for an evening to discuss the novel with other families. Novels for Book Cafés portray well-developed characters of diversity who are challenged to make difficult decisions to resolve conflicts. As several families interact in a discussion group, multiple and diverse perspectives surface, which enrich and broaden students’ cultural understandings.
