Get Ready to Learn (GRTL)
Get Ready to Learn (GRTL) is the character education component of Apple Tree's Every Child Ready (ECR) curriculum. GRTL is a research-based practice created by Apple Tree Institute that utilizes explicit, direct instruction to teach pro-social skills to Preschool/Pre- K students. This approach to character education utilizes developmentally appropriate practices to actively engage students as well as teach them school culture, desired behaviors, and expectations. Lessons are introduced in small groups for the first three weeks of the academic year. This approach recognizes that many students may be encountering their first academic experience; therefore, lessons are presented in a systematic manner that includes the explanation of the skill, practicing the skill, and skill generalization. This approach to character development has been successful because it not only provides students with basic foundational skills, but it also enhances the academic curriculum. It incorporates the language, books, and poems that are a part of the ECR curriculum. This seamless connection between the academic and social portions of the curriculum supports students in a comprehensive manner.
