Mardi Gras Diversity Day
This is an annual event organized by special education teacher, Laura Beaulieu and transition coordinator, Sheila Vander Tuig along with the help from others in the special education department. It is a day full of activities involving the entire student population, faculty and community members. In addition, special education students from area high schools are invited to participate. Mardi Gras Diversity Day begins with an all-school assembly with a guest speaker talking about an area of disability. Over the years these special guests have included a dance troupe with Down syndrome, a wheelchair basketball team, a parent of a student with autism and a disability lawyer with a visual impairment. After the assembly, there are crafts, games and other activities lead by a number of student volunteers. Then our culinary arts team treats all participants to a Cajun-style lunch. This year, special recognition was given to local employers in our community who have hire disabled employees. Mardi Gras Day ends with a parade around the school led by the school band. It is a day that everyone at Baldwin High School looks forward to every year!
