K-ROCK
Kindergarten students from eight high poverty, inner-city schools were selected to participate in Kindergarteners' Respect Others through Cooperation and Kindness (K-ROCK). Funded initially by one of ten national Sprint grants, kindergarten students from eight schools were divided into experimental and control groups and both were assessed both pre- and post-intervention. Utilizing character education themed-based literature kits and Lessons in Character: Lay a Foundation of Responsibility, lessons were taught at least twice weekly by teachers and other support staff. In addition, parents also were encouraged to check-out materials related to character in order to help strengthen what was being taught at school. The results were so effective, this practice was continued during the 2011-2012 school year as well.
