Safe & Caring Schools in the 21st Century
A safe and caring environment contributes to successful schools. This C of C project supports K - 9 students and empowers them to reach their full potential as learners by giving them the information and skills they require to be safe. A careful consideration of what parents, teachers, and students indicated was a critical need in the area of child protection, resulted in the discovery of the "Kids in the Know" program, an interactive and engaging student safety program designed by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection to empower children and reduce their risk of victimization on the internet, in public places, on the street and at home. This program promotes assertive and proactive behavior as the foundation of effective personal safety and healthy relationships with a strong focus on healthy online relationships. At the senior high level, the project focuses on digital citizenship and engaged students through a Community of Caring Digital Citizenship Student Symposium, a "Cyber Ethics" resource for teachers, and digital citizenship student-led projects/clubs with an empahsis empahsis on ethical, safe, and responsible behavior both on and off-line.
