Peace Week
"Peace Week" is a week-long, school-wide celebration held at the Sixth Grade Center in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During the third week of January each year, the entire school focuses on teaching positive ways of handling conflict and promoting peace throughout our building. Students in each homeroom participate in daily activities that teach tolerance and conflict resolution skills through a variety of methods such as performing skits, writing journal prompts, holding classroom discussions, and watching video clips. The students create acrostic poems, decorate posters, and sign a Peace Pledge on how they can make the Sixth Grade Center a more peaceful and safe place. The staff focuses on teaching positive ways to handle conflicts, such as negotiation, compromise, requesting mediations, asking for adult assistance, agreeing to disagree, walking away, and apologizing. The staff teaches the accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in relation to tolerance and how we can continue his efforts in our everyday lives at the Sixth Grade Center.
