
First Summer Institute on Character Education
The First Summer Institute on Character Education took place at Secundaria Bilingue Isaac Newton in Chihuahua, Mexico. It was attended by more than 270 teachers and school staff from more than 10 schools of the country. Presentations were given by several experts. Dr. Thomas Lickona director of the Center for the 4th and 5th R's of Suny Cortland, gave a workshop on "Actions to Prevent Cruelty and Promote Peer Kindness". Dr. Hal Urban gave a workshop on "Lessons for the Classroom -- 20 Things that Good Teachers Do". Vidal Schmill, a specialist in Human Development and Thinking Skills Development, shared with us his workshop on "Smart Discipline at School." Finally, Dr. Kathy Winings, author of "Building Character Through Service Learning" joined our group as well. The Institute allowed the presentation of the book "Caracter", Spanish version of "Character Matters" written by Dr. Thomas Lickona. Finally, there was a space called "Sharing Experiences", where teachers showed some of their best practices in their communities and classrooms.
