The Greenwood Community Garden
The Greenwood Community Garden was a collaborative creation by first and fourth grade buddy classrooms in 2009. This endeavor started from scratch, with the hope of giving Greenwood Elementary students an opportunity to serve others in our community, experience gardening, connect a hands-on experience with our science curriculum, cooperate with other students, learn about economic diversity in our community, and build a home-to-school connection around character. Our nine character traits; courage, compassion, citizenship, cooperation, perseverance, positive attitude, respect, responsibility, and honesty connect closely with the garden program and student understanding of those traits has been strengthened through their gardening efforts. Students can see the fruits of their labor develop as their work takes seeds to harvest. Each step of the way, students gain a deeper understanding of the significance of their work which culminates at the end of the growing season when all of the produce is delivered to the local food shelf.
