Boot Camp
In boot camp students exhibit and practice leadership skills that are essential to achieving post secondary goals and outcomes. Boot camp teaches students to help others, to self-monitor, and to lead groups with paired buddies, while motivating students intrinsically to transition from rewards to reflection and recognition. Boot camp is a student lead group that focuses on teamwork, wellness, and physical education. Students participate in leadership activities, while engaging in a peer mentoring program. Boot camp sessions consist of warm up exercises (stretches), a student lead team building activity (obstacle course, parachute activity, or team sport), and a self-evaluation and discussion of the activities strengths and weaknesses. These boot camp sessions lead up to a service learning project in which all students participate. The following are a list of service learning projects that boot camp mentors and buddies have completed: painting a track on the playground black top, designing and planting a sensory garden, breakfast delivery for autism classes, and preparing and setting up for the school wide talent show and prom.
