Character Captains
Character Captains (C.C.) are essential components of our character education program at Jefferson School. Every student at Jefferson has the opportunity to serve on this leadership committee. Each month several representatives are chosen to represent each class. This group comes together each month to discuss character and relevant issues. This committee gives students a voice concerning building decisions and also provides them with an active role in problem solving. By allowing all students to serve, we empower each of them to lead, provide fresh ideas, and have input. After we meet, each character captain returns to the classroom and reports back to the class. Many times these C.C.s will run a class meeting or teach a lesson to the class. During our weekly Friday character assemblies, these character captains are celebrated in front of the entire student body. Our teachers write a few short notes on why each student is a positive influence on his or her class. The notes are then read aloud while the students stand in the center of the gym. To culminate the students experience as a C.C., there is a luncheon with the principal to celebrate their contributions.
