L. W. Conder's A+ Girls (All Positive Girls)
The A+ Girls is an intensive mentoring program. Positive behavioral support, increased academic involvement and higher self-esteem leading to a desire to become everything one is capable of are results of the relationship between the students in grades four and five and their mentor. The students meet each morning from 7:40 until 8:10 with the mentor and classroom visits/individual sessions are scheduled in the afternoon from 2:00 until 2:30. Group participation is limited to 25 students. During the morning group activities that develop trust and caring are explored and through the attention of the mentor self-value is raised and the students are ready to self-actualize. Service projects such as big sisters/little sisters(mentoring first grade students), performing songs for retired veterans, serving breakfast for grandparents, performing at the end-of-year musical, and serving at the Mother/Daughter Tea afford the opportunities to put this self-actualization into practice. The progress of the students is charted each day and particular emphasis is placed on classroom study skills and life skills. Teacher comments are discussed with the mentor.
