Parent and Peer-Led Tutoring Program: A Community Approach
LCTA displays a strong sense of community and an open door policy. Ties between diverse families, teachers, parents, and staff are obvious. The Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy (LCTA) tutoring program is possible through parent and student volunteers who work together to help students in need of additional learning support. In 2010, ACPS presented the LCTA PTA with a Partners in Education Award for a parent-tutoring program that immediately yielded positive impact on falling test scores. In 2011 parent volunteers increased by 110% covering over 80% of kids in need of tutoring. This equates to approximately 75 parent volunteers tutoring 90 children. In addition to parent volunteers, student volunteers also participate in peer tutoring. This develops a strong sense of caring between the children and parents, and an awareness that the success of the school and each individual child is dependent upon ensuring a collaborative effort between all students, parents and the community.
