The Senior Citizen Appreciation Banquet
Each year the Neosho R-5 School District hosts a Senior Citizen Appreciation Banquet on the Friday before Thanksgiving. Invitation postcards are mailed to all district patrons with information for an RSVP so the district knows the number of senior guests who will be attending. The Food Service Department prepares a traditional Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, dressing, side dishes, and pumpkin pie. The Transportation Department has designated parking areas around town where seniors can leave their vehicles and board a district school bus and be delivered to the Neosho Middle School where the event takes place. The Buildings and Grounds Department sets up tables and chairs. District administrators and Central Office staff decorate the tables and stage area. Students help in various areas of the event. Teachers train students who will be in direct contact with senior citizens about escorting them, making small talk, helping to seat them, and getting their coats arranged. The Senior Citizen Appreciation Banquet provides an opportunity for Neosho R-5 students to be seen at their best and make positive impressions. Historically, 850 senior citizens and 300 workers participate in the event.
