North Boulevard School Colors Program
North Boulevard School is very unique in the community of Pequannock Township in that it houses a program for children with autism. The school has housed the SNAPP (Special Needs Amongst Pequannock Peers) Program since 2003. The students range in age from 3-10. These students also vary in ability levels on the autism spectrum. The students all have deficits in social skills and social awareness. The COLORS program first evolved because we wanted our students in the SNAPP program to have the opportunity to be with and learn from positive peer role models, but it needed to be in a more play and unstructured environment. The name was easily given to the program because of the unique logo for Autism Awareness. Our COLORS program was developed to provide opportunities for friendships and positive peer models with our 5th graders and special needs students. In this way both students could benefit from the program and teach each other. Our school motto for COLORS is "All children blend together." The students are taught this motto and asked to write about what they have learned and explain their experience to the student body at an autism assembly in April each year.
