Communication beyond a Language Classroom
Students with language disabilities or autism spectrum disorders have been given, and are taking advantage of, several intentionally provided opportunities to practice, develop and improve social skills throughout the school day. Through the Renaissance program, current student leaders, with coaching and support of staff, interact with students working on these skills. Interactions take place while serving on committees, working in small groups, in partners, or as a whole group. Opportunities for social interactions vary, based on the needs of the students, and are monitored by general and special education staff together. In the Renaissance program, students are involved in maintaining and building positive school spirit, and working toward school improvement, while improving skills that will benefit them through high school and beyond.
