Oakville High School Tiger Mentors Program
Selected junior and senior leadership students begin working with our 8th graders by visiting their middle schools in the spring to discuss the transition to high school. They talk about expectations and answer questions. Also in the spring, the Tiger Mentors develop an orientation program for the 8th graders to spend half a day at the high school. In August, every incoming freshman receives a welcome phone call from our Mentors who are their hosts at Freshman Orientation as the new class is greeted. The Mentors begin the high school journey with them by walking their schedules, helping with their lockers, and making connections with the freshmen. Tiger Mentors facilitate team building activities as part of this welcome program. When school starts, our Mentors are assigned to each freshman ANP (Academic Networking Period) advisory room. With the support of the freshman counselor and two faculty advisors, they provide team building activities, offer tutoring, celebrate birthdays, keep them informed about activities, events, and clubs, and become a regular presence so the new students have upperclassmen with whom they can connect.
