Kid-Nectors: A Program Where Everyone is Connected
Approximately two students per class in grades K-5 are chosen by their classmates to serve as "Kid-Nectors". The students' main responsibility is to keep their eyes open for anyone who appears to be alone at lunch, recess, or on the bus. The Kid-Nector's job is to invite any child sitting or playing alone to join the Kid-Nector and their friends at recess and/or invite the child to sit with the KidNector and their friends at lunch. Kid-Nectors are trained to be allies. If they see/hear anyone being bullied, they know what to say and do to help someone who needs help from bullying. Students also serve as ambassadors and tour visiting families as well as greet visitors. Lastly, Kid-Nectors make a promise to consistently demonstrate Pierremont's five core character traits. All Kid-Nectors wear a special bracelet. If an adult monitor sees a student who needs to be connected, this visual helps them to know which child to ask to go make a connection with the isolated student. Kid-Nectors meet regularly with the counselor to discuss how things are going. Due to the heightened awareness, these students are instrumental in helping to create a safe and caring community for all.
