Compassionate Classrooms
All of our Service Learning opportunities fall under the umbrella of what we call Compassionate Classrooms: Creating a Culture of Caring. Compassionate Classrooms is a Service Learning philosophy, which spans many projects within our school. With guidance and support from their teachers, students: promote/organize fundraisers; educate the school and greater community on community needs and health issues by visiting classrooms, attending Parents Association meetings and creating podcasted Public Service Announcements and media advertising campaigns. In addition, our students write: original Anti-Bullying raps and plays; letters of comfort and gratitude; and heartfelt persuasive outreach letters to our local community to ask for and thank them for their support of our philanthropic efforts. To support the outcomes on our Penny Harvest campaign we have created a survey to understand the depth of the learning which is available for your review. This year our students used the statistics of our local food pantries and their increasing number of recipients to create outreach letters. Numbers tell a compelling story and their letters were compelling and persuasive.
